The Blessing of the Thorn-Second Edition (excerpt)

As I write this page I am now into my 6th decade of life. As I look back upon these years, I realize that through this span, sexual sin and the effects of sexual addiction has always been there. Almost 4 of those decades have been spent in the area of counseling and mental health and sexual sin has probably affected more than 90% of the clients I have interacted with. These interactions occurred in inpatient, outpatient, residential and correctional institutions.

During the early 90’s, I began working strictly in the area of Christian counseling and ministry. Prior this I had worked many years in the field of chemical addiction and was very familiar with the various types of addictions. At the same time, I moved into Christian counseling, I also begin hearing the term sexual addiction and the debate over whether it really existed. I was working at that time in a Christian inpatient program and I begin to see repeatedly Godly men struggling with the secret of sexual addiction. There was the pastor who was hospitalized for suicide attempts that were driven by his secret of sexual addiction. There was the former missionary that had been consumed by his sexual addiction, taken off the mission field and had lost all hope and purpose in life. Then there were the loved ones of the sex addicts that were also paying the price for the secret lives of their loved one. There was the pastor’s wife with an eating disorder and multiple suicide attempts because of the shame she carried in protecting her husband’s addiction. There were the female children of sex addicts that were now adults and struggling to deal with the abandonment of their fathers and his objectification of women. There were the adult male children of sex addicts that did not know how to love their wives as Christ loved the church and only knew selfish and objectified “love” of women. The list goes on and on. I realized throughout these interactions that the church had a problem and we weren’t dealing with it. I started to read whatever I could on the issue of sexual addiction, I asked questions, attended workshops and found opportunity to work in intensive workshops for sexual addicts and their wives. Probably, the most beneficial thing I did was to listen to these brothers and sisters in Christ that were in the struggle. Since that time in the early 90’s I have listened to hundreds of stories from Christian sex addicts. These were not short stories but long stories that in some cases took days to tell. In those stories, they began to teach me what they needed and how their relationship with sexual sin had developed and where it had taken them. This book is intended to present the observations, and themes these men taught me regarding their affliction. This book is not designed to create pity for the sexual addict or to shift blame away from the addict. There is no intent to try to diminish the addict’s culpability regarding his actions. My hope is that, as a body of believers, we might better understand this assault from the enemy and stop shooting our sexually wounded or in some cases ignoring their plight.
