Our testimony is never a statement about us but always about Jesus. It should never define us, control us or eliminate grace from our lives. When our past “testimony” controls our ability to be honest and makes our Christian walk a façade, then we are no longer walking by faith but by fear and the approval of others.

Testimony

Lance Armstrong has vehemently denied, lied, pledged, sworn and promised for years that he had never used PID’s. He “threw under the bus” his closest friends and teammates when they confronted him with allegations of his doping. We now hear of tearful confessions before his supporters and Oprah Winfrey. What does all this mean? Does this represent a man who is in true repentance from his sins? Is this all so-and-tell theatrics in order to gain approval or reputation? Has his guilt and shame caused his “bones to waste away” because he kept silent for so many years? There may be only one person who can answer the questions regarding Armstrong’s confession. But even Lance may not know what is in his own heart.

Grief and Shame as Motivation to Overcome

I remember a colleague of mine at a treatment center I worked at years ago commonly made the comment that we don’t see enough people blushing or weeping over their sin. Weeping is a direct representation of repentance because of one’s sinful nature and the need for God to fill one’s heart. We should allow ourselves to feel the pain of what our sin has done. That is part of the grieving process as well. We should be able to grieve over the consequences of what sin has done. If all you do is smile after you realize what sin has done you haven’t been truly honest. This weeping is part of the shame process from original sin.
