Romans 5:8 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Election time has finally come and gone after many months of non-stop TV, radio, and printed advertisements. We now know the outcome of local, state, and national elections. We live in a great country where the people truly get to elect their chosen leaders and officials. I wonder what our election results would have been in years past if they had the media coverage we have today. Let’s face it, many of our past presidents were not that attractive, could have lost a few pounds and probably lacked great oration skills. Would we have elected George Washington if we knew all the details of his past? What if TMZ cameras had followed Abraham Lincoln around and critiqued his scraggly beard and ruddy complexion? Would we have deemed him not attractive enough to be our president? When the Israelites chose their first king, they chose Saul because he looked like one. He was muscular, tall, dark and handsome. Saul may have looked like a king but he did not have the heart of a king. When God chose His king, he selected a boy who had a heart that pursued Him and not self interest. Let’s face it, when it comes to choosing anybody, we usually just look at the external appearance.
I once heard a wise old pastor make this statement; “When you were dead, stinking, maggot ridden, road kill in sin, Jesus died for you!” Let’s say you have a pet dog that you love very much. One day he goes missing. One day turns into several weeks and he is yet to be found. Weeks later you are driving down the road and you see the remains of your beloved dog. He has been dead for several days and the decomposition process is well under way. It would be highly unlikely that you would stop the car and begin mouth to mouth resuscitation upon this cherished pet. When we are covered in our sinful unregenerate natural state that is exactly how we appear to God. First of all, we are dead in our sin. There is nothing you can do on your own to change that condition. The only person that can bring something or someone that is dead back to life is God. There had to be a righteous payment for our sin and rebellion. God looked at the whole span of time and declared that he could not find anyone righteous enough to make this payment. So what did God do? He provided the payment Himself through His only Son. It is through Christ’s love and sacrifice that we are brought to life. He did not do this because we did something to deserve it. He did it because of His love for us and it was freely given. Romans 5:8 teaches us that while we still covered in the ugliness of our sin, he died for us.
What if others had the ability to look into the deepest parts of your heart and mind? I don’t believe we would ever be elected for any public office and would even have a hard time being elected to be someone’s friend. God did not elect us into His family because of our abilities, external appearance or party affiliation. He elected us through the works of His Son. What are you basing your eternity upon? Is your faith placed in your own works or the blood of the Lamb? If you are leaning upon your own abilities then I don’t believe your election results will be favorable.
