Blinded by the eclipse

The sun is 400 times larger than the earth’s moon but on August 21, 2017 this little dead rock was able to block the sun’s light for just a moment across much of the United States. By the time you read this, several million pairs of protective eye wear will be occupying the landfills throughout this land. The signs along the interstates warning people to not stop for the sun blocking event will be rolled back into storage. Teachers will have collected and graded the special homework assignments they gave regarding this once in a lifetime teachable moment. Even though warnings were given repeatedly, surely some genius are now sitting in hospital rooms wishing and praying their vision loss is not permanent.

How was this small moon able to conduct such a powerful feat? Even though it is 400 times smaller than the sun, it is 400 times closer to the earth. This fact is true about most anything in our lives. The things which we draw closest to us are the things that garnish the most attention and tend to block other more significant items. If your career is more important than your family, it will draw your greatest attention and at times block out the needs of your family. If entertaining yourself and the pursuit of happiness are more important than obeying and serving the Lord, it will draw your passions and desires away from Him and at times block it entirely. The solar eclipse only lasted a couple of minutes and so is the case with most finite things that draw our attention and focus away. Most Christians will realize putting their careers before their families is not healthy or God honoring, so they will adjust their focus back to their family. Most Christians will be convicted of giving God left-over time and place boundaries regarding their pursuit of pleasure. For most of us these misdirections are just like the eclipse. They are for just a short season. This is not the case when it comes to sexual addiction. Sexual sin is developed in the fantasy world. It advertises itself as something that will block all the pain and stress in your life and leave you only with feelings of pleasure and no costs. The more we visit this fantasy world the more it blocks and consumes. With most sexual addicts, there was a time when the eclipse of their sexual sin was seasonal just like the solar eclipse. They could tuck it away after a business trip or before the family got home. They lived under the delusion they were in control and would never do anything to block or harm their relationship with the Lord and family. This seasonal sexual sin eclipsing, however, is blinding the future addict to the consequences of his current behavior. He doesn’t see how even these seasonal escapes are hurting his family and taking his focus away from God. He doesn’t see how he is actually drawing this foreign object even closer with each episode and delusional thinking. Over time this object of his desire will block everything in his life and consume his entire focus. On 8/21/17 the moon blocked the sun but with sexual addiction this idol will block the Son.

You may be in a place of despair right now and believe you will never see the love of Christ again because of this apparent permeant eclipse of your sexual sin. You may fear you will never have the joy of your salvation returned because of your tremendous guilt and shame. You may have a loved one who appears to be forever blinded by their sexual sin and have lost hope they can ever be healed.

Some people reported feeling a temperature drop when the sun was blocked and once the moon moved away the warmth returned. The same is true of God’s Love.

1 John 1:9 (NKJV) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When it is blocked by the addiction He feels distant and cold but when we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us. He can and does remove the barrier of addiction. He can and does restore sight to the spiritually blind so they can see the paths of righteousness. He can and does impute the warmth of His Love into the places of our heart that have grown cold from the barrier of sexual sin. Over 2000 years ago, God paused the moon and sun while His Son was dying on the cross for the sins we will commit today. That includes our repeated sexual sins. If God is big enough to stop the sun and moon then I believe He is big enough to restore the sexually broken. Why not let Him begin today?
