Approval Addiction

Galatians 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. (NKJV)

I have found the driving force under many addictive, destructive or compulsive behaviors is the desire for approval. Everyone likes approval and no one seeks disapproval. The problem occurs when we make someone else’s opinion more important than God’s. When that occurs, we start building an idol around that person’s opinion and we become a bond servant to that person. These become very insecure relationships because we fear if we do not perform well we will lose their love and approval. During Paul’s day, a bond servant was someone who willingly remained as a slave to someone and he did so because he loved his master. It appears that Paul had once been a bond servant to man’s approval and now willingly sought only to find God’s approval. Paul’s motivation for good works now came from his love for Christ and knowing that he was bought at a tremendous price. What motivates your works today? Is it for the affirmation, validation and approval of man or is it because of your love for Christ? You cannot do both.
